Best Samsung Phone for Photography in 2026: Every Galaxy Camera Ranked

Samsung’s Galaxy A55 was released in March 2024 with a 50MP main camera with OIS (the same camera setup as the Galaxy A54).

Since we haven’t reviewed it ourselves, we’ve collated info about its camera from trusted sources including Samsung, GSMArena, SamMobile and DXOMARK, and compiled it into this Galaxy A55 camera guide. Read on to find out how well the Galaxy A55 camera performs and if it’s still worth buying in 2026.

Reviewers found the Galaxy A55’s 50MP main camera performs well during the day and produces decent shots when Night mode is enabled. On the other hand, its 2x crop is weaker, as is its ultrawide camera at night. The Galaxy A55 supports Pro and Pro video modes, but it doesn’t support Expert RAW. If you’re in the market for a Samsung phone in 2026, you should probably consider the newer Galaxy A56 or Galaxy A57 first. That said, if you can get your hands on the Galaxy A55 at a steep discount, it might be worth picking up.

What you get vs an S25 Ultra

  • The main sensor is 1/1.56-inch, against the S25 Ultra’s 1/1.3-inch one.
  • There’s OIS on the main camera.
  • There’s no 200MP main camera or telephoto camera this time around.
  • Video recording maxes out at 4K/30, with no 4K/60 or 8K recording.
  • You get Pro and Pro video modes, but no Expert RAW.

Real-world camera performance

In GSMArena’s tests, colours were found to be natural, but still retained some liveliness, while detail and sharpness impressed and even slightly surpassed those of the A54. Dynamic range and exposure were deemed excellent, with noise a little noticeable in the skies and in some shots taken indoors. As for the 2x option, it fared worse in daylight than its 1x counterpart with fuzzier and noisier pictures, though surprisingly held up well at night. Finally, while the ultrawide produced impressively sharp images free of colour fringing during the day, GSMArena noted its pictures became noticeably softer and noisier once the sun set.

At night the main camera was mostly solid because the phone often switched to Night mode by itself, and those shots came out clean and natural. However, SamMobile’s findings suggest switching on Night mode when shooting in low light as the Galaxy A55 won’t necessarily do so on its own when it would benefit from it. The Galaxy A55 earned a camera score of 108 (using the older DXOMARK v5 camera testing protocol) in tests conducted in March 2024. Good points mentioned by DXOMARK included generally accurate exposure and texture levels that were fairly high for images taken in good lighting. Areas for improvement cited by the review included noise in dark areas and autofocus that sometimes has difficulty keeping up with moving subjects. Our Galaxy A55 settings page lists starting values for other situations.

Video footage can be recorded in 4K/30 from both the main and ultrawide cameras. Stabilised 4K video clips are among the best with electronic stabilisation around this price, according to GSMArena, which also thought that night video quality was good but suffered from bright highlights.

SamMobile noticed more jittery stabilised 4K footage, particularly in poor lighting conditions. DXOMARK found video stabilisation to be fairly good when standing still but ineffective when walking.

According to SamMobile, there’s a Pro mode for taking photos and recording video, which lets you control settings such as exposure manually.

What's missing

Samsung’s mid-ranger doesn’t have Expert RAW, a telephoto camera or the ability to shoot 4K video at 60fps. And Galaxy AI isn’t available out of the box either, according to SamMobile’s and GSMArena’s reviews.

That said, Samsung’s Mexico newsroom confirmed Circle to Search for the Galaxy A55 and Galaxy A35 in September 2024. Still, we couldn’t find any official page from Samsung mentioning the Galaxy A55 in connection with Photo Assist or Generative Edit, so we recommend checking out the Gallery app’s editing options yourself after installing the latest software update.

Battery, storage and SIM

For its price, the Galaxy A55 has a surprisingly premium-feeling design with an aluminium frame, Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the front, a glass back and IP67 dust and water resistance. The Galaxy A55's 6.6-inch Super AMOLED display can refresh at up to 120Hz. The Galaxy A55 supports charging speeds of up to 25W over USB-C and is powered by a 5,000mAh battery. There's no support for wireless charging.

The microSD card slot is handy if you like recording lots of 4K video, but note that the microSD card slot is hybrid (it's the second nano-SIM slot). That said, most variants of the Galaxy A55 support eSIM, so you can still use two numbers alongside a microSD card if you really need to. The microSD card slot is handy because it supports cards of up to 1TB. Other expensive Galaxy models, such as the S24 FE, don’t offer an expansion card slot.

Software support and newer models

Samsung released the Galaxy A55 back in March 2024 with Android 14 and One UI 6.1. The company promised four Android updates and five years of security patches, so expect the Galaxy A55 to continue receiving updates into 2029. In May and June 2026, One UI 8.5 with Android 16 landed on the Galaxy A55, debuting first in South Korea and rolling out later to other countries such as India and nations in Europe. According to Android Authority, a stable build of One UI 9 came to Galaxy A55 owners in South Korea in October 2026, and Beebom noted that Galaxy A55 beta testers in India started receiving the update from 26 October.

The Galaxy A55 isn’t Samsung’s latest mid-range offering. Its successor, the Galaxy A56, was released in March 2025. The Galaxy A57 and A37 were released in April after being unveiled in late March 2026. Before buying one, make sure to check the prices of the Galaxy A56 and Galaxy A57. If the Galaxy A55 is way cheaper than the other two and you mostly take pictures during the day, then you can still consider getting it. If the A55 still costs more than you want to spend, our Galaxy A35 camera guide covers its cheaper sibling.

Is the Samsung Galaxy A55 camera good?+
GSMArena says that for the cost, it performs well. They found that in detailed daytime shots the phone delivers great dynamic range, and clean Night mode images with the main sensor. The 2x crop and the ultrawide lens at night fall behind, though, and flagships still excel in comparison when it comes to zooming.
Does the Galaxy A55 have Galaxy AI?+
Only a small part of it. Samsung added Circle to Search later in 2024, though GSMArena and SamMobile note there weren’t any Galaxy AI features at launch. We haven’t been able to find a Samsung page that lists it as being available for use with Generative Edit or Photo Assist.
Can the A55 shoot 4K video?+
Yes, you can shoot 4K/30 from the main camera and the ultra-wide. There’s no 4K/60 or 8K option though.
Is the A55 better than the A54?+
It’s only marginally better. Otherwise it’s pretty much the same with that 50MP main camera with OIS, although SamMobile notes that night shots have slightly cleaner processing. And of course there’s the Exynos 1480 for faster performance. If you have an A54, upgrading isn't necessary.
Does the Galaxy A55 have wireless charging?+
There’s no support for wireless charging, but you can charge the A55 over USB-C at up to 25W.
Does the Galaxy A55 have an SD card slot?+
The microSD card slot can hold cards of up to 1TB, but it’s actually a hybrid SIM tray, meaning if you use a memory card you’ll be using up the second nano-SIM slot (the other line would have to be eSIM).
Does the Galaxy A55 support eSIM?+
Most versions of the Galaxy A55 allow you to pair a nano-SIM card with an eSIM (support may vary by carrier and region), so you can use two lines. The SIM card tray has room for a microSD card, too.
When did the Galaxy A55 come out?+
Launched in March 2024 (announced on March 11 and released later in the month), Samsung’s mid-range A55 will be two and a half years old by the end of 2026.
How long will the Galaxy A55 get updates?+
Samsung promised the A55 four Android upgrades and security patches for five years from when it was released, so it will get security patches into 2029. The A55 already got One UI 8.5 (based on Android 16) in mid-2026, and One UI 9 (based on Android 17) started rolling out in October 2026.
How much did the Galaxy A55 cost?+
At launch, the 8GB/128GB variant of the Galaxy A55 was priced at £439 in the UK and €479 in Europe. It was never officially released in the US. Prices have dropped now that the Galaxy A56 and Galaxy A57 have been announced and released, so consider this price as the upper limit of what you should pay.
Is the Galaxy A55 still worth buying in 2026?+
At a clear discount, yes. If the pricing is similar, we recommend the A56 or A57 for longer software support. Otherwise, you're looking at an IP67-rated phone with a 120Hz AMOLED screen, OIS on the main camera, microSD card slot and aluminium frame at a significant discount on the newer options.
Samsung’s affordable A-series Galaxy smartphones can’t quite match the imaging chops of pricier flagships, but shooting techniques go a long way towards closing the gap. Samsung Photography Academy comprises 60+ short (5-minute) lessons designed to help Galaxy phone owners get the most out of their cameras. The course comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee.
