Samsung Best Face: Fix Blinks in Group Photos
How Samsung's Best face swaps a blink for a better expression from a Motion photo, which Galaxy phones have it, and what to check when it isn't showing.
One cool feature is Best face, which uses frames from the Motion photo (that’s recorded along with the still image) to replace the face of anyone who blinked or was talking in the main shot with one from another frame. If you’re taking group shots, this can save you from having to redo the shot, but if the option doesn’t show up, it’s probably because Motion photos weren’t enabled.

Why Best face isn't showing
If you’re looking for Best face and you’ve scrolled through a group photo looking for it but can’t seem to find it, chances are something went wrong when the photo was taken. According to Samsung’s own support page, Motion photo has to be enabled when you take the shot, so check that first.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No Choose best face on any group photo | Motion photo was off when you took them | Turn Motion photo on before the next group shot. A photo taken without the clip can't get one later |
| It appears on some group shots and not others | Motion photo is set to Auto, which saves a clip only when it sees enough movement | Choose On instead of Auto for posed groups |
| Missing on a photo someone sent you | The clip didn't survive the trip through a messaging app | Ask for the original file, or use Best face on the phone that took the photo |
| Missing on photos from Portrait, Night or Pro mode | Motion photo is a Photo mode option | Shoot group photos in Photo mode |
| Missing on every photo, even with Motion photo on | The phone doesn't have Best face | Check the model table below |
| One face can't be changed | The clip has no better frame of that person, or the face is turned away or hidden | Take another shot with that person facing the camera |
| Only some people in a big group get options | Best face identifies up to five people | Split a large group into smaller shots, or accept the five it picks |
Make sure that you’re connected to the internet and that you’re logged in to your Samsung account, as Samsung’s notes for its Gallery AI tools mention. If you can’t see Best face or any of the other AI-powered suggestions in Gallery, this may be the problem. If you’re already online and logged in, continue reading.
Which Galaxy phones have Best face
There’s no definitive list of Samsung phones with Best face (at least, Samsung doesn’t publish one), so we’ve put together a list based on information from Samsung’s website and other reliable sources.
If your phone isn’t on the list, shoot a Motion photo with two or three people in it and see if you can find Best face.

According to Samsung’s support website in the US, the Gallery’s AI-powered photo editing features are available on some of Samsung’s phones and tablets running One UI 6.1 or higher. Since Best face launched alongside One UI 7, it isn’t going to show up on any device capped at One UI 6.1. We give more details about the clip in our Motion photos guide.
How Best face works
According to Samsung’s Galaxy A57 support page, Best face analyses photos based on expressions, lighting and focus to determine which would look best together. As Tom’s Guide explains, when you tap the shutter button, the camera takes multiple pictures around that instant. Then when you open the photo in Gallery and choose Best face, it pulls faces from other photos in the series and lets you pick which one to composite into the image.
Unlike Samsung’s Photo Assist features (such as AI eraser, which generates pixels that weren’t previously there, and according to Samsung’s footnotes, adds a watermark indicating AI-generated content when you save an edited photo), Best face doesn’t seem to add a watermark (Samsung’s Best face instructions don’t mention one). And instead of Samsung making up pixels out of thin air, Best face simply grabs a face from another photo the camera took around the same time. So if exact timing is essential, save the original image.
Set up the camera before the group shot
Tap the Motion photo button (top row in Photo mode) and select On from its three settings (as opposed to Auto, which according to SamMobile only saves a video if there is sufficient motion, and a stationary group shot might not qualify). We verified these steps on a Galaxy S25 Ultra with One UI 9 in November 2026.

Open Camera settings > Photos > Motion photos and select Before and after shutter (as opposed to Before shutter only, according to Samsung’s own support page) so that the video will also include the moment after you’ve taken the shot, which is often when people stop squinting and assume more natural poses. There’s no advantage to using 50MP for this type of image as a Best face edit will be saved at a maximum of 12MP anyway. Our resolution guide describes situations where the higher resolutions can be useful.
Bear in mind that each Motion photo will include both an image and a short video file, so it will take up more storage space than a standard photo. If storage space is tight, remember to change Motion photo back to Off when you’re done taking group photos.
A group-photo routine that gives Best face options
- 1
Face the group into soft light
Have them stand facing a window or open shade (not in direct sun). Best face uses what’s in the video clip, so it’s better to have more light.
- 2
Count the faces
For groups of more than 5 people, try splitting the group into 2 groups of 5.
- 3
Turn Motion photo On
Before taking the shot, make sure you’re in Photo mode and that Motion photo is turned on (tap the Motion photo button and make sure it’s set to On). This will make sure that all of your photos have video clips that Best face can use.
- 4
Use a hands-free shutter if you're in it
Turn on Voice commands like Smile or Cheese, or Show palm (in Camera > Settings > Shooting methods), so you can be in the photo too.
- 5
Hold still after the press
Once the photo’s been taken, don’t move the phone for a second or so. Tell people to look at the camera until you tell them it’s OK to stop posing.
- 6
Take three frames
Take 3-4 photos in a row. Each photo will have a slightly different Motion photo which will give Best face more expressions to choose from.
How to use Best face in Gallery
These steps follow the Samsung support page in the US. The steps are the same if you have a Galaxy S or A phone.
Note: Depending on the version, you may or may not see the Details step. In some cases, Choose best face is displayed as soon as you swipe up.
- 1
Open the group photo
Find and open the group Motion photo in Gallery by tapping its thumbnail in Camera or finding it in one of your albums.
- 2
Open the details
Tap More options (three dots) or swipe up on the photo. Tap Details (if applicable).
- 3
Tap Choose best face
Tap Choose best face and you'll see some of the faces have been marked as recognised. Select the face you want to change and it'll be outlined in a yellow box, according to Tom's Guide.
- 4
Pick an expression
From the list of expressions at the bottom of the screen, you can choose which one you want. If you want to see other expressions, tap View more. To get back to the initial expression, tap Previous.
- 5
Save a copy
Tap Save and select Save copy, which keeps the original image (with the clip) and your edited image side by side in your Gallery.

What Best face can't fix
Best face can select from a maximum of five people from videos up to 3 seconds long. Best face isn’t a miracle worker, though. If someone’s eyes are closed for the whole clip or a face is obscured by a friend’s shoulder, Best face won’t help. Tom’s Guide’s tester also found one photo where the feature offered no alternative for him (likely because his eyes were closed in every frame).
According to Samsung, Best face can choose from up to five people. The feature works with clips up to 3 seconds long, and saves photos at a maximum of 12MP. If Best face doesn’t nail it on the first try, you can always tap Previous and try another option before saving your new photo. Because Best face is grabbing a face from another frame, you may notice slight inconsistencies around glasses, the jawline and hair.
Best face is best used in situations when everyone is posed for the camera, but when you’re ready to hit save, pay particular attention to edges. For children who won't stand still, burst shooting gives you a run of full-resolution stills to choose from, and our children's photography guide covers timing. Single Take is another option for events, since it saves several stills and clips from one capture. The event photography guide covers capturing groups in mixed lighting at celebrations such as parties and weddings.
