Galaxy Z Flip7 Camera: Specs, Tips and Flip7 vs Flip7 FE

Galaxy Z Flip 7 camera guide: specs, cover-screen selfies, Flex mode and low-light tips, and how it compares with the Flip7 FE, Flip6, Flip8 and S25 Ultra.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip7 uses the same camera setup as last year’s Galaxy Z Flip6, with a 50MP main camera and 12MP ultrawide camera. Its larger cover display (4.1 inches) is more convenient for selfies with the main camera, and the best reason to pick up a Flip.

In this article we’ll discuss the specs and some shooting tips, and compare the Galaxy Z Flip7 with the more affordable Galaxy Z Flip7 FE, Galaxy Z Flip6, Galaxy Z Flip8 (which kept the same cameras) and Galaxy S25 Ultra. We haven’t reviewed the Galaxy Z Flip7 ourselves, so image-quality comments come from the reviews listed at the end.

The cameras on the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Flip7 FE are pretty much identical: a 50MP f/1.8 main camera with OIS, and a 12MP ultrawide camera. There’s no telephoto camera, so anything past 2x (up to 10x) is digital zoom. For selfies, there’s a 10MP selfie camera on the inside. You can also use the main camera for selfies with the help of the cover screen as a viewfinder (while the phone is closed), or prop the phone open in Flex mode for hands-free pics. One difference between the Galaxy Z Flip7 and the FE is the size of the cover screen: 4.1 inches on the former and 3.4 inches on the latter. The FE also sports the older Exynos 2400 chip.

As per Samsung’s own support page for this pair of phones, 4K 60fps video capture is possible with all the cameras and digital zoom goes up to 10x on both phones. Autofocus is absent on the ultrawide camera, which is also incapable of shooting objects at close range. The 10MP camera inside too has fixed focus as per Notebookcheck.

Z Flip7 camera quality: what reviewers found

Detail is strong and colours and dynamic range are accurate and wide by day, according to SamMobile, and images have less noticeable sharpening effects than those taken with the Flip6, which helps photos of text and other images with fine lines to look better.

Photos taken with the Flip7’s cameras are good, according to Notebookcheck, which says the main camera is the one used in the Galaxy S25. Images taken by the ultrawide camera retain good quality by day, if slightly soft towards the edges. SamMobile wasn’t as impressed with night-time pics from the ultrawide camera.

Colour accuracy in low light (1 lux) is significantly worse than in regular lighting conditions, according to measurements made by Notebookcheck. According to SamMobile, images taken with the main camera retain decent detail at night, but they’re a bit too noisy. Night mode is strong, but its processing can be a touch excessive, leaving faces over-processed, according to Engadget.

Still, Tom's Guide noted a clear improvement in night shots over last year’s Flip6. DXOMARK scored the cameras a respectable 137, with the main camera getting 153 and zoom getting 109.

All in all, the Galaxy Z Flip7’s cameras are dated, according to Engadget, and SamMobile found they aren’t as good as those you’ll find on slab-form-factor flagships like the Galaxy S25. But for a flip phone, they’re good.

Flip7 vs Flip7 FE: what differs for photos

On paper the phones have identical cameras, a 50MP main and 12MP ultrawide on both models, but SamMobile says the FE is essentially a rebranded version of the Flip6 with a less powerful processor.

Tom’s Guide put the cameras head-to-head, and while there wasn’t a clear winner, with some images taken on each phone coming out on top, it did note that the different processors mean photos can look slightly different.

  • The larger 4.1-inch cover display on the Galaxy Z Flip7 (the FE’s is 3.4 inches) is handy for framing selfies with the aforementioned main camera. It’s also brighter (2,600 nits peak brightness versus 1,600 nits), making it easier to see in bright conditions, and supports adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz instead of a standard 60Hz.
  • Samsung advertises 1.22μm pixels for the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE’s 10MP f/2.2 camera versus 1.12μm pixels for the same resolution and aperture on the Galaxy Z Flip7, meaning the former’s sensor is a hair larger. These will mostly be used for video calls, though.
  • With a 4,300mAh battery compared to the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE’s 4,000mAh unit, the Galaxy Z Flip7 should last a bit longer, which is handy if you’re shooting video all day long.
  • Although the Galaxy Z Flip7 initially cost significantly more ($1,099.99 for the 256GB model in the US versus $899 and $959 for the 128GB and 256GB Galaxy Z Flip7 FE variants, respectively, at its July 2025 launch), Samsung temporarily slashed its price to $899 on its online store in the US back in December 2025.

If you can get a price on the Flip7 that’s close to the FE’s, get the Flip7. Its larger cover screen makes it easier to compose that special Flip shot.

How to take selfies with the main camera

The Flip7’s inner 10MP camera will get the job done for video calls, but for photos you’ll actually want to keep, close the phone and use the 50MP main camera with the cover screen as a viewfinder.

According to SamMobile the results are much better this way, if a touch washed out at times. Here’s how, according to instructions on Samsung’s Flip7 support site:

These are Samsung’s own instructions for One UI 8. Keep in mind that as of the end of September 2026, the Flip7 is being updated to One UI 9, so the location of some of the menus may be slightly different.

If you unfold your phone to take a photo of your friend, tap the preview icon in the upper-right corner of the screen to show the framing on the cover screen so your friend can check their hair before you take the photo. Face effects and mirroring are the same as on other Galaxy phones (our Samsung selfie settings guide has an explanation of what they all do).

Flex mode: hands-free group shots and Hyperlapse

Flex mode can be used at any hinge angle between 75° and 115°, according to Samsung UK, meaning you can prop the half-folded Flip7 on a wall, table or rock, aim using the cover screen and take the shot hands-free.

  • Open the Camera app from the cover screen and show your palm to the camera to begin the countdown. (Samsung’s Flip7 page puts this feature under Camera settings > General > Shooting methods.)
  • You can also take pictures using voice commands, found in the same menu. Just say “Cheese” or “Smile”.
  • Use the timer for group photos, where a raised hand would spoil the shot.
  • For hyperlapse videos of moving clouds, traffic and sunsets, prop your phone up in Flex mode and choose Hyperlapse from More.

In Flex mode, you can also use the Flip7 as a camcorder. Simply rotate the half-folded phone onto its side, grip the bottom half, and use the rear camera to shoot video while viewing the action on the inward-facing display.

Zoom, low light and video tips

Unfortunately there’s no actual telephoto lens, but the 2x option does a decent job cropping in from the centre of the 50MP sensor and digital zoom extends up to 10x.

Illustration of a woman filming a street guitarist at dusk with an open flip phone

According to SamMobile, the 2x option is close to lossless when shooting in 50MP mode, and while the quality does suffer a little in the default 12MP mode, it’s still quite usable.

  • Zoom in using 2x when shooting portraits (especially in Portrait mode, where it flatters faces more than 1x up close) and other situations where you need to capture details in bright conditions. Our portrait mode guide covers blur strength.
  • Try to get as close as physically possible to your subject before zooming in with your camera (beyond 2x).
  • Keep in mind that the main camera’s f/1.8 lens will let in more light than the f/2.2 ultrawide lens, so stick to the 1x option when shooting at night.
  • Use Night mode for still scenes, preferably with your phone propped up using Flex mode, to prevent camera shake.
  • Ask people to hold still at night. Since Night mode takes multiple shots and stitches them together, anything that moves during the shot will appear blurry.
  • When shooting selfies at night (using the display on the back of the phone as a viewfinder), keep an eye out for overly bright faces, and move away from bright light sources if necessary (according to SamMobile, selfies taken using Night mode could result in overly bright faces).

Our Samsung night mode guide explains how Night mode works and when Pro mode does better.

Unfortunately there’s no 8K recording, but every camera shoots 4K video at 60fps. According to Engadget, HDR recording has been bumped up from 8-bit to 10-bit and SamMobile also points out Log recording is supported, which will help if you want to do some colour grading.

Flip6 vs Flip7. Samsung says both phones have the same camera setup. The changes are the cover screen size (4.1 inches, up from 3.4), the switch from Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to Exynos 2500, and support for shooting 10-bit HDR video. In Tom's Guide's ten-round camera shootout, the Flip7 beat the Flip6 in low light, in portrait mode and when using the 2x zoom option. The older Flip6 took better selfies, and Tom's Guide called it a tie when it came to daylight shots, close-ups and dynamic range. If you already own a Flip6, however, we wouldn't rush out to upgrade just for the camera improvements. Our Galaxy Z Flip6 camera guide and Flip6 camera settings help you get more from yours.

Flip7 vs Flip8. The Galaxy Z Flip8 went on pre-order on July 22, 2026 at $1,199 with the same camera setup as the Flip7, a 50MP main camera and 12MP ultrawide. According to SamMobile, there weren't any meaningful changes to the Flip8's camera hardware. The Flip8 does have the Exynos 2600 processor, however, and it's slightly lighter and skinnier than the Flip7 (180 g and 6.1 mm unfolded, respectively, compared to the Flip7's 188 g and 6.5 mm). It also has a new Horizontal Lock feature, which can be used to keep horizons nice and level when you're shooting Super Steady videos. One UI 9 brought the My FanCam video feature to the Flip7, but we couldn't confirm Horizontal Lock for it. If photography is your main concern, though, a discounted Flip7 is the better buy. See our Galaxy Z Flip8 camera guide for what’s new there.

Flip7 vs S25 Ultra. The Flip7 isn't going to beat Samsung's camera monster, the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which shoots with a 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultrawide and two telephoto cameras (3x and 5x). But the Flip7 folds down to a compact 85.5 x 75.2 mm and its cover display means you can take selfies with the main camera while using the display as a viewfinder. If you're after zoom for wildlife, sports or architecture, go with the S25 Ultra. If you mostly shoot yourself, your friends and your food, go with the Flip7. Our S25 Ultra camera guide explains its zoom.

Flip7 vs Razr 2025. Motorola's Razr (2025) launched at $699.99, $400 less than the Flip7, and still managed to pack in a 50MP main camera (with OIS), a 13MP ultrawide and a 32MP selfie camera on the inner display. The Razr also has a not-bad 3.6-inch cover screen, although it's not quite as big as the Flip7's. Both devices do a nice job of letting you use the main camera for selfies, but the Flip7 wins out with its more powerful processor. Unfortunately, we haven't found any head-to-head comparisons of photo quality between these two.

Is the Galaxy Z Flip7 worth it?

Buy the Flip7 if you take lots of selfies, group shots and short videos, and want a phone that fits a small pocket. A slab phone can't do main-camera selfies or Flex mode. From a Flip5 or older, it's a big step, since the Flip5 had a 12MP main camera.

Just be on the lookout for deals. Yes, the Galaxy Z Flip7 currently starts at $1,099.99 at Samsung’s online store in the US, but the company has offered a limited-time deal bringing the price down to $899. Our best Samsung phone for photography ranking is ideal if you value zoom and night photos. These are the Flip7’s limits:

  • DXOMARK gives the zoom capabilities its lowest score. And beyond 2x, you’re using digital zoom, not optical.
  • The ultrawide and inner cameras have fixed focus, so close-up shots are out.
  • Video tops out at 4K 60fps, and 8K isn’t an option.
  • You get IP48 water resistance, not IP68, so the phone can handle fresh water but isn’t dust-tight.
  • Any motion in a night shot will appear blurry, and the ultrawide camera performs poorly in low light.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Galaxy Z Flip 7 camera specs?+
On the back are a 50MP f/1.8 sensor (with Dual Pixel autofocus and OIS), a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide (123° view) sensor, and inside, a 10MP f/2.2 sensor for selfies. There’s no telephoto sensor, so zoom is a 2x crop (or up to 10x digitally), and all of the cameras can shoot 4K video at 60fps.
Is the Z Flip 7 camera quality good?+
In daylight, yes. DXOMARK gave it a camera score of 137, with SamMobile noting strong detail, dynamic range and accurate colours in good lighting. Night shots and zoom images were less impressive, with reviewers describing some photos as noisy or over-processed.
What's the difference between the Z Flip 7 and Z Flip 7 FE cameras?+
The cameras at the back are identical. The FE comes with the previous-gen Exynos 2400 processor, a 10MP selfie camera with marginally bigger pixels and a 3.4-inch cover display (instead of 4.1 inches). Tom's Guide couldn't declare a photo winner between the pair.
Is the Z Flip 7 waterproof?+
It’s water-resistant, not waterproof. The Flip7 is IP48-rated, meaning it can withstand immersion in fresh water up to 1.5 metres deep for up to 30 minutes. Samsung recommends against taking it swimming with you at the beach or pool. The 4 means it’s not dust-tight, either. Notebookcheck cautions that smaller particles could work their way into the hinge.
Z Flip 6 vs Z Flip 7: is the camera better?+
Slightly. The cameras are neck and neck on paper. The newer Flip7 has a new chip and shoots 10-bit HDR video, and it also won out in Tom's Guide's opinion in a few categories, including 2x zoom, low light and portraits, while the Flip6 won the selfie round. The Flip7 also has a bigger 4.1-inch cover screen.
Should I buy the Z Flip 7 or the Z Flip 8?+
Flip7 for photos. The Flip8 also has 50MP and 12MP cameras and cost $1,199 at launch. You get the Exynos 2600, a lighter design and Horizontal Lock for videos with the Flip8.
Is the Z Flip 7 worth it?+
Yes. The main camera can be used for selfies, and Flex mode allows for hands-free photography. All of this crammed into a pocketable device, especially at a discounted price, makes it a winner for many buyers. If you want more photographic versatility with zoom, however, the Galaxy S25 Ultra's 3x and 5x telephoto cameras make it the camera champ.
