How to Get Better Photos From the Galaxy Z Flip6 Camera
Galaxy Z Flip6 camera guide with rear-camera selfie and Flex mode steps, settings by situation, what GSMArena and DXOMARK found, and the newer Flips.
For selfies, close the phone and use the main 50MP camera instead of the one on the inside. You can compose using the little cover screen. Fold the phone halfway into Flex mode and place it somewhere for a hands-free shot. For even better photos, here are some camera settings worth changing.
We haven’t tested a Flip6 ourselves, but this procedure is the way Samsung describes taking pictures on the Galaxy Z Flip6, and the comments on picture quality are based on results from GSMArena’s and DXOMARK’s tests of the phone.

Galaxy Z Flip6 camera specs
| Camera | Spec | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Main | 50MP, f/1.8, 23mm, 1/1.57-inch, Dual Pixel AF, OIS | Also your best selfie camera, and the source of the 2x crop |
| Ultrawide | 12MP, f/2.2, 13mm, 123° | No autofocus, so subjects closer than about 40cm go soft |
| Inner selfie | 10MP, f/2.2, 23mm | Fine for video calls |
| Cover screen | 3.4-inch Super AMOLED, 720 x 748, 60Hz | The viewfinder for rear-camera selfies |
| Video | 4K60 on all cameras, HDR10+ | No 8K |
| Chip and battery | Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 4,000mAh | Launched July 2024 at $1,100 in the US |
Meanwhile, the Flip6 packs a 50MP main camera (compared to the 12MP main camera of the Flip5 according to GSMArena), with in-sensor 2x crop, plus AI-powered zoom of up to 10x. There’s still no telephoto camera, though.
How to take better photos with the Flip6, step by step
- 1
Set the side key to open the camera
In Settings > Advanced features > Side button, enable Double press and select camera. Now, with the phone closed, double pressing the side button launches the camera app on the cover display.
- 2
Shoot selfies with the rear camera
Position yourself on the cover display and select 1x zoom for a solo selfie. According to GSMArena, the internal 10MP shooter is oversharpened, so using the main shooter with the cover display as a viewfinder is a better and easier option.
- 3
Switch to 0.6x for group selfies
For group selfies, use the Flip6’s ultrawide lens. It should be able to capture everyone standing at arm’s length comfortably. According to GSMArena, it works well, but bear in mind that there’s no autofocus, so make sure everyone is at least ~40cm away from the lens.
- 4
Half-fold the phone for hands-free shots
You can prop the Flip6 half open against a wall or on a table to use it as a stand. The display splits the camera UI with the viewfinder on the top and controls on the bottom. Samsung’s Auto Zoom feature in Flex mode should be able to frame and zoom in on a group shot all by itself.
- 5
Trigger the shot without touching the phone
Under Camera app settings > Shooting methods you can enable Show palm or Voice commands to take selfies by showing your palm to the camera or through voice commands respectively. The usual selfie timer is also there.
- 6
Pick Night mode yourself after dark
GSMArena found Samsung’s approach to be on the conservative side in terms of when it applies its night processing, so it’s better to manually select the Night mode. Just remember to prop up the phone on a flat surface or use Flex mode as a stand while it captures the image.

Settings by situation
| Situation | Lens and mode | Settings |
|---|---|---|
| Solo selfie | 1x main, cover screen | Photo or Portrait mode, 50MP in daylight |
| Group selfie | 0.6x ultrawide, cover screen | Arm's length or further |
| Everyday daylight | 1x main, Photo | Default 12MP, tap to focus |
| Detail or portrait of someone else | 2x crop, Photo or Portrait | Daylight, and walk closer before going past 2x |
| Hands-free group shot | Flex mode, 0.6x or 1x | Show palm, voice or the self-timer |
| Night street | Night mode, 1x | Select it manually and hold still |
| Video | 4K60, 1x | Stabilisation on, and Pro video for 24fps |
| RAW for editing | Expert RAW | 12MP for Astrophoto and Multiple exposure |
Different starting values are useful under different situations; see our Flip6 settings page for a longer list.
Review findings for the Flip6
GSMArena liked the Flip6’s camera performance, noting that the main camera takes detailed and clean shots with strong dynamic range and accurate colours, and with less sharpening and grain than the Flip5. The 2x crop mode takes noticeably better pictures than on the Flip5, and GSMArena also found that the 50MP mode captures more details. They had fewer kind things to say about the Flip6’s low-light capabilities, saying that although the 2x mode on the main camera is still usable at night, they were expecting a bigger improvement over the Flip5.
On the Flip6 you can shoot video in up to 4K60 on all cameras, and GSMArena said that electronic stabilisation works very well. There’s also a Pro video mode that allows you to record at 24fps.
Meanwhile, DXOMARK gave the Flip6 a camera score of 129 (using its older v5 scoring protocol) and said that it delivers appropriate exposure levels, good contrast and a good dynamic range in both photos and videos. Its main gripes were a lack of details in zoomed-in shots, artefacts around the main subject when using bokeh mode and unstable exposure and colour rendition in videos. In its verdict, GSMArena counted the versatile camera system and better zoom than before among the phone’s strengths.

Expert RAW, Galaxy AI and updates
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 was the first Flip phone to feature support for Samsung’s Expert RAW mode. Multiple exposure and Astrophoto modes are only available in 12MP with Special photo options enabled. Samsung’s rebuilt Photo Assist editor came to the Flip6 as part of the wider One UI 8.5 rollout kicking off 6 May 2026. Our Expert RAW guide walks through its RAW capabilities.
According to SamMobile, stable One UI 9 based on Android 17 started rolling out in South Korea in October 2026, followed by a worldwide rollout. The Flip6 launched with Android 14, so Android 17 is its third upgrade. Samsung said at launch it would deliver seven years of OS and security updates for the phone. See our One UI 9 camera guide for an overview of what’s new for photos.
Who the Flip6 suits, and the newer Flips
The Flip6 may be a good choice for people who love taking selfies and videos (that aren’t too long), and want a phone that folds into a small package. But if you value taking zoomed-in photos, you might want to look elsewhere. There’s no telephoto option, and DXOMARK notes images taken using the zoom lack detail. For long-range photos, a slab phone with a telephoto such as the Galaxy S25 makes more sense.
The Flip7 and the Flip8 that replaced it both have the same camera setup on paper, a 50MP main and 12MP ultrawide, but a bigger 4.1-inch cover screen. Samsung revealed the Flip8 on 22 July 2026, and according to SamMobile, the price in the US starts at $1,199. The Galaxy Z Flip8 camera guide describes the new features that the latest version of the software provides, and the Galaxy Z Fold6 camera guide is about another, larger foldable phone released the same year as the Flip6.
